i can get a decent (linux) rootserver (not vserver or something) with 2400mhz, 512mb ram, 80gb hdd and 1000gb traffic @ 100mbit line for 22€ a month. installing vmware with windows possible. also with some technical knowlege about the recovery console and how to make an autoinstalling windows image with vnc preinstalled its possible to install windows instead of linux
whats expensive here in germany is traffic. servers that are 'unmetered' will usually be slowed down to 10mbit if they reach about 2000gb. a real unmetered 100mbit line costs about 1000€
Don't forget your money is worth more than our USD at this point in time. Also the $200-300 I listed for a server was to actually purchase it. But to answer your question yes hosting is very expensive in the US. Gotta love capitalism.
