Actually the $18-25 is extremely cheap and will most likely bite me in the ass. However the rackspace I rent and the hardware I purchased are paid off for 2 years and 6 months (got a wicked deal on the co-location). So you don't need to worry about us going under if you sign a 2 year contract. I've already written all costs off as loss and if I make 5% in return I will consider it to be a good investment and stay in permanently.
As for the VPS it on average costs $60 a month, but you are sharing a single server with usually around 10 other people and give equal share of RAM and CPU. Which means if you go over 10% of either they shut you down without a moments notice. Purchasing a small box equipped to handle what you need it to right off the bat for around $200-300 and you OWN it. Which means you can even turn around and VPS the thing if you wanted. If you don't need a server? A couple of quick tweaks on our end and you have an affordable workstation.

The diskspace is also metered at that company.
