Introduction:
From the makers of, well...nothing really...bring you, Surviving the Seasons! A time-based RPG! The game currently features a unique time system, and guess what, seasons. The game consists of "surviving the seasons". There are currently 4 seasons, starting with spring, to summer, then to fall, and then winter. There are 15 days in a season, 24 hours in a day, and 60 minutes in an hour. Each minute is 1.5 seconds of real time, and can possibly be adjusted depending on how the beta testing goes.

Features:
Unique season system, which changes how the game looks depending on the season!
Time which is displayed on-screen
800x600 Full-screen game, 25x18 maps
Hide-able / move able chat box
Key commands instead of button clicking (which you are told when you enter the game)

What needs to be done:
Full advanced quest system that uses time / seasons
More skills (tree cutting, fishing, basic survival skills, whatever)
Seasons affecting your condition (winter makes you sick and lose HP if you aren't wearing armor, etc)
Taking out leveling possibly and using stamina more (for running, etc)

No screen shots yet, but a Youtube preview will be coming after it gets done uploading. I'm also doing an open alpha where people will come on to test out the lag and menu for errors and so on just so I can fix anything before I move further on.

Actually the Season systems in that Zelda game were annoying as hell.

The graphics that I've got in are temporary...all I did was recolor them with Photoshop. With the system I'll be able to add in snow on buildings, trees, etc...

I'm going to finish the character creation screen and then do some basic in-game content and release the client for people to lag test it and test out the before-game menu because I had to do it from scratch basically...it's all done on one form (except for create character) and I got rid of all of the forms basically (except for the editors). The EXE is only 300~ KB.

I just made an on-screen message system. Since the chat will be able to be hidden I set up so that messages will pop up at the bottom center of the screen. Like when you pick up an item "You have picked up blah blah" will appear on the bottom center of the main screen instead of in the chat box.

I'm trying to think of what I need to do...

Just fixed it so it doesn't go back to the main menu every time. Also fixed up the new character window SLIGHTLY...still need a lot of work. And changed the font of the login / register / etc to fixedsys.

Also going to do visual inventory most likely.

I know it was on MR but it's needed because the chat can be hidden and people won't be able to always see messages that come on the screen...also it has to go on the bottom middle because the map is at the top and the bottom left and right is for time.

Big Grin I had 3 people on testing it a second ago.

The before game menu works 100% so far. Got the sprite to display walking down when selecting your character. Need to do the new character screen still. Fixed an error with whispering to people (you type !giaken hey and it tells the person "giaken hey", which is fixed). Also fixed the window message disappearing too fast. Also added spring.

Here's how creating your character will work:

You will first create a name, then select your gender, then select which season you want to be best suited for, which will change your appearance (like winter you'll wear a coat, summer a t-shirt, etc), and then you will be able to change your hair color, and then hit enter to confirm. I will possibly add more stuff in later...or I'm probably missing stuff that I need to put in and not remembering it as of this post...

Also going to do a welcome message when you log in (which will be able to be disabled). It will say all the commands, any recent news, etc...

Just stayed up late working on the new character window and was able to fix some small bugs.

I've still got to work on the new character screen more though...adjusting the arrow so it's centered (got temp numbers in because I don't feel like doing it right now), having the character's season saved, displaying which gender you've got selected (lets you change but you can't see the gender image), and got to do hair color (not in at all yet).

Just finished the new character window Big Grin The only thing I need to do now with the new character window is to display the character and add in hair color changing. I also reworked the select character window to now display your season and such Big Grin It looks a lot better.

I was so happy with it, I decided to take a screenshot Big Grin

Is it using DX8?

Nope I'm using DX7.

Alright with the new character window I've got it displaying the sprite, but it only changes for male / female. We don't have seasonal sprites yet so I can really implement that until we get it.

Also got in very basic visual inventory. All it does is display the items. The using / dropping / etc doesn't work yet.

make the black box around the person transparent.

I like the basic idea of the look of the char creation screen, although I'm not so sure about the background picture of the three different colors of grass. I'm sure there is a more suitable picture than that.
