No... people don't want to learn this crap. They want to make a game. Nobody says "I want to learn how to make games", they say "I want to make a game". We should help them MAKE thier games, instead of trying to get them to do it the long way.

so what you are saying is we need an engine and not a base
I meant maybe learning VB6.. lotsof people say they want to learn vb6.. like me...
You can learn VB6 from reading through Google or paying attention to tutorials, not having huge complicated tutorials that don't aren't step by step.
im saying we need tutorials that aren't copy this paste here copy this paste here, but some that go you need to add blahblahblah here because it means that a packet is being sent to server, this part of the line is telling you that hp is being deducted from the ammount blahbla blah
I personally would like to learn more about VB6 and programming, but telling someone to go look through google, when they came to the forums where most of these engines started to learn about programming, doesn't help much. I would like to see tutorials discussing how to go about adding features or programming, not just giving you the code and telling you where to put it.
And as Labmonkey said, there is a large group of members (not all mind you) that just 'want to make a game', giving them a very sparse looking base and not saying anything doesn't attract their attention. A well polished engine that some newbie can pick up and immediately begin the dev stage of a game is something they want.
I'm not saying get rid of the base, it's very handy for those people who don't want all the polish because they have a neat idea they want to implement on their own.
Offtopic... I want to say completely delete it, but then most of the smart (although lazy) programmers leave, but it would get rid of a lot of the shit. Eh, I don't know.
Well 99% of the forum is in the Archive Hell forum now and I resynced forums and posts and such and reset the forum's start date to today.
Same here man.. about the first paragraph lol
Ok, sorry I should rephrase my sentence. SOME come here to learn, but many/most come here (or now to ogc or eclipse) to make a game, learning is sometimes a by-product, but we in general want to make games. Atleast I want to make games, but im beginning to think that nobody agrees with me on this one..
Anyway, unlock the archived shit forum, and remove the crappy slogan under the name.
No...the archive is read only. If you want GOOD topics moved back to the site, PM a staff member.
Doomy Wrote:don't you guys relize that the real death of the forums and mirage source is not the arrangement of the forums, but the lack of support for the engine, everyone who knows anything about coding, doesn't make tutorials or anything, what we really need is someone to make a tutorial about packets, someone to make a tutorial onhow to do stuff, a tutorial with comment lines on why everything happens Good idea. Ill see if I can write "Teaching" Tutorials.
Yay

Just redirect to MR.
Nothing can be done.
Quote:Robin:
Why aren't maps and shit loaded up in a dynamic array?
Jacob:
the 4 people that know how are lazy
Robin:
Who are those 4 people?
Jacob:
um
you, me, and 2 others?
We should produce more product things,
Like newer source codes and descriptive tutorials.
and tbh the "Rip the shit out of anybody who doesnt program to perfection attitude" doesnt help.

If you want my expert opinion, the biggest issue isn't the stuff all you cocksuckers are mentioning. The biggest issue is that people DO visit this site, look around, and then think, "WTF is going on here? The main page is a joke, I can't find screenshots, and when I d/l the source, I can't open anything!". Unless you adress those points, you can make a really great version of MS and still get 0 new people. And if you quote this to disagree with me, let me be the first one to tell you you're an idiot.
And yeah I know the engine sucks, needs screen shots, and so on...but that's not my department. I don't plan on working on the engine at all besides some tutorials maybe. I have my own engine to work on and I don't want to have to change MS4 to include everything my engine has, which is pretty much what it needs.
Which is what I think Jacob is thinking about MR, too.
Fuck features. Upload some decent screens, a WORKING compiled version, and a youtube vid. Make a new page on the main site called "Read me first", and half of the potential new people will actually KNOW what this site is about, instead of just jumping to the next one.
Joost Wrote:Fuck features.
Features is what makes an engine. This "ORPG making software" cannot make ORPGs people want...this is just a teaching tool as it is and in order to progress it needs to be more. Also, as ALREADY STATED, I do not care about the engine.

Yeah, I can't edit the site I don't think.
Compare PW to all the engines out there. PW was crap, and had no interesting features. Yet it was fuxpopular. Features don't mean shit, it's about the promotion.

You just confused yourself...
PW has features. MS doesn't. You said PW was popular...even though the features sucked it still had them, which is why it got popular.
PW had signs. It had no proper talking, no differences in NPC's, attacking, casting, items (well, visual items in later stages) no questing, was filled with bugs, had a rather poorly done GUI, offered limited music support and was shitty. Still it produced some gewd games, like TheFaith.

And right now I am working on my tile for the Hexquisite Corpse Collab (Tile #19) So i cant do it yet.
