Your friend may be experienced in Flash, but the website isn't all that great at all.
But without going into a conversation about your friends website... By all means make a new site, but don't make it so complex that there's tons of useless gadgets. I've never really seen anybody complain about the current website.
There's a big difference between Mirage Source and Toolkit though. Their community is huge, there are some VERY popular games on there, and probably more games now that work than Mirage Source has ever had.
Unless the MS community grows to a point where the forum is hugely archived with working downloadable games, there isn't really any need for a website with all these bits and gadets.
But of course, whatever your ideas and goals I fully support you on it and wish you the best of luck.
