Basically, each item has a proficiency level requirement and a level requirement. You get 1 exp per kill towards each proficiency.
It's proficiency level * 1000 for the tnl. So, to get a level 3 dagger proficiency, you would need to kill 2000 mobs.

What are the benefits of having a high proficiency?
Stronger weapons and armor, as well as magic.
Higher the proficiency, the higher level your weapons, spells and armor can be. Also, there's a goal after you reach max level. Each proficiency has a max level of 100.
