Hrm... that explained a few things at least, but whatismyip.com still shows the same external IP for both.
It'd not really be faster per se, but less likely to lag, because I'm only using my memory for server or client as opposed to both.
I may just get someone to host the server for me, though.

EDIT2: Tested on other players and sure enough it worked. My major problem was that I had the port forwarded to my external IP, which in my case didn't work. I instead forwarded it to the IP my router gave the terminal, 192.168.0.103 in this case, and reset my router. Connections were then able to go through just fine with other players connecting to the external IP.
I feel pretty silly, but thanks a lot for answering my question and pointing me in the right direction. ^^
