Mirage Source really isn't for you. Paper doll is very simple. All you need to do is look at how sprites are drawn and then save the paperdoll image for that item, and when it's equipped, draw the item's image over the sprite.
It's pretty simple. And what I just said, is about as close as you're gonna get to this shit being handed to you.
