You don't need a chip its just easier. You can do the swap method... you insert a special CD/DVD and then you open tray with a tool... insert the burnt game and then lock the tray back in and its a go.

Yeah a chip is easier but its a cheap method that works. And its really easy to do so unless you cant follow instructions you wont mess up your system.
