Try making the weapon sets like this,

yeah, i didnt make the weapons. I got them off of a Item Sheet from an ED Game. I just used it as a test for my sprites.

The weapons have the correct size. Never seen characters like Cloud holding a big ass blade? I've seen it multiple times in 2d rpg games.
