Winds Whisper Release!
I need to finish sorting out the new host, but apart from that the next release is practically finished and I'll be releasing it either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how a few closed-tests go, to make sure all the most obvious bugs have been worked out.

Here are some of the more notable completed features:
  • Quest System.
  • Items & Spell Animations.
  • Woodcutting.
  • Sliding Maps.
  • Animated GUI.
  • Animated doors.
  • Advanced NPC AI.
  • Immersive sounds and music.
  • Spellbooks.
  • Advanced Spell Types.

Development:
  • Around 50 playable maps covering two main areas, Devinshire & Glenvale.
  • 3 Classes. Warrior, Dark Mage & Light Mage. Each has the basic level 1 to 60 equipment sorted.
  • Many NPCs in the towns to bring life to the game, and lots of monsters to fight.
  • Can't really think of much off the top of my head. xD

Check out the site for more information.

Anyway, I'll keep you all updated on the release!

Enjoy,
Robin

RE-RELEASED

Quote:Yet another open test. This time to see what the new host feels like with a few people on.

Few things to keep in mind:
  • The client will be changing often, so run the autoupdater if you don't know if you've got the latest client files.
  • There are some known bugs which are being worked on.
  • The spellbook feature is not accessible, so only log on as a Warrior... unless you don't mind being weak.
  • I'll be developing whilst the test is open. Mainly, I'll be mapping the new cave system to link Glenvale with Devinshire.
  • Shops aren't rendered properly.
  • The banks is problematic, and doesn't let you stack items. You'll only be able to store around 50 items because of this.
  • The text rendering in the inventory is cut off, and the shadow is slightly off.
  • The sliding maps are still a bit buggy. The first map slide after logging in, dying or warping will display the wrong map, but all the slides after that should be fine. I'm currently looking into this.

There are only a few things to do atm, until I finish the mapping:
  • Talk to Ronald north of Devinshire for some information on making potions.
  • Talk to the Lumberjack outside the Devinshire caves for some information on woodcutting.
  • Talk to the Merchant in the Devinshire caves for the health potions.
  • Kill things. Mainly bats. I'll add a few more monsters in as well.
  • Talk to the Priest in the Church for free healing.

Errors:
If you come across any errors, or haven't run a VB6 game before, make sure you have all the right dependencies.

For general VB6 library files, install the Ascentive Library Files.
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/libraryfiles.exe

For Essence-based games (Like Winds Whisper), install the Essence Library Files.
http://www.pwnz.co.uk/downloads/Essence_..._Files.exe

Before reporting errors, make sure you install both of these.

You'll need WinRAR to extract the client

LARGE UPDATE - NEED TO DOWNLOAD A FRESH COPY

Quote:A pretty large update has come about, which will need you to re-download the game.

You can download the new client here:
http://www.windswhisper.com/downloads/client_0.6.rar

Here's the main changes:
  • Fixed a bug in the Auto Updater which forced certain files to be re-downloaded.
  • Re-programmed a large part of the engine, including the sound system. The client no longer requires Dx8.
  • Optimised and replaced many functions and subroutines. Also re-organised the code structure.
  • Re-compiled the sprite set from scratch, and there is now a matching face set which will be used in later features.
  • The IsConstAnimated function now loads the npc numbers from const.ini, rather than a hardcoded enum.
  • Few small GUI fixes. The menu GUI is still mostly from the old GUI however, whilst I still work on the new one.
  • The chat system now works fully. No more blank names.
  • Position Modification. It no longer kicks you for this.
  • Re-programmed the Server loop.
  • Added map caching, which should make map transitions a lot faster.

The following bugs are known and are being worked on:
  • Class not displayed properly in the GUI
  • Spellbooks are still not working properly, and because of this aren't accessible in game.
  • Map transitions are fairly temperamental. Your first transition after logging in, dying or warping will be bugged. If you have bad lag, then the map transition will show the wrong map. I'm still looking into this.

Thanks,
Robin

Just a bit of proof I'm still doing things:

I'm gonna be taking another go at working on the game in a different way. The areas are gonna be a bit more detailed, and with many different skills to work on. Already have woodcutting of course, gonna add mining & fishing and the like.

Also, I'm going to expand on the spellbook idea and also make different sets of types of spells, rather than a Warrior being a tank with a few spells, it'll have special skills based around it's own abilities.

So far I've deleted all the data. Also added in some new features and I'm re-working all the different maps.
